Introduction (Twine)

The introductory sequence is in Twine. You cannot fail this sequence, or even get into a loop. The only difference in outcome is the path you take to get there, and whether you procrastinate and turn up a little late to your Dad's hospital room or not. Different paths give you different text and character insights.

Main Game - A Very Important Date (TADS 3)

Overview of puzzles

The main game is a parser game in TADS 3. You have dropped off outside a party and need to find three elements to get in:

There is no time limit.

Hints for what is possible are available in the foyer on the sign (READ SIGN).

You only need one of each category, but are free to find as many as you like. There are five solutions to each category.

Invitations

You need an invitation to the party. There are five possible invitations for you to acquire and borrow.

Catsby's invitation

In the Upper East hallway, The Great Catsby is sitting on an invitation. Get it from him.

Ruby's invitation

Mild hint

In the basement, someone has put Ruby's invitation on ice. Maybe it was all a bit of hot air.

    > turn dial to 16

Note This puzzle is a slight homage to the Babelfish puzzle in Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the craze of excessively wrapping a present for someone.

Scientific discovery

This is the hardest puzzle!

An out-of-this-world discovery would be a great thing to share with the community!

Mild hint

In the observatory, follow the scientific process suggested and solve some tricky puzzles. If you show things to the octopus, he might be able to help.

Full walkthrough

This is a Proper Puzzle™ requiring you to make some intuitive/logical leaps and write things on paper.

Start in the Observatory

  1. Get the entire scientific process in a sticky note

    > read pink sticky note

  2. Observe that we have received some preliminary data

    > x monitor

  3. Dismiss the screensaver

    > move mouse

  4. Print the primary report and read it.

    > press 1
    > get primary report
    > read primary report

  5. So we know all the data was received. None was corrupted, but they are out-of-order. We need to reorder them.
  6. Note that there are 40 data triples.
  7. Note that each triple is of the form (x,y | c), with x and y between 1 and 7. This might suggest a 7x7 square with maybe 9 spaces.
  8. Note that each last bit of the triple is a number between 1 and 26. There is a handy conversion chart on the whiteboard.

    > x sticker

  9. For each triple (x,y | c), look up the last number in the alphabet, then put that at (x,y)
  10. The message reads: TWEAK RECV TO CBAND SIX PT FIVE ELLIPSE THREE ONE. We turn the radio on and use those settings.

    > turn radio on
    > x panel
    > turn band to c-band
    > push up
    > set polarization to elliptical 3-1

  11. Ask the computer to receive data

    > push 0
    > x monitor
    > push 2
    > read secondary report

  12. Similar puzzle to before, except we have also lost some data. Decode in the same way to get the message: ?IX?E?N ?T F??E ?IR?U?A?. We repair this to SIXTEEN PT FIVE CIRCULAR
  13. Playing around with the band select and noting the frequency ranges, you can tell which band is 16.5 GHz: X-Band

    > set band to x-band
    > x panel
    > push up. g. g. g. g. g. g.
    > set polarization to circular
    > push 0
    > push 3

  14. The final report! This is a bit different. It details a bunch of deltas, which is physicist language for changes. On a grid, start somewhere in the middle, then follow the changes. For example Δ(3,3) means go right 3 spots and up 3 spots. Draw straight lines between subsequent points and you'll draw a figure... A heart!

    cardioid

    > x monitor
    > enter heart
    > get certificate

Note You can use cardioid, heart, heart shape, loveheart,

Finale

You've played the game your dad made. You've got questions. He's got surgery planned. The clock is ticking.

This Twine section is heavily based on storylets. By asking questions and making choices, you open up more. Try to have a good conversation before your dad is whisked away for serious surgery. The coda is decided by a score based on your choices.

While there is a continual loop in gameplay (back to the main storylets), you can just choose anything appropriate and it'll get to an ending. It may not be the ending you want, though.

You can also choose to Hug it out, which finishes the conversation early.

Finale mechanics

There are a few interests, some competing:

  • Ruby wants to understand her father's health and his future.
  • Miles (Ruby's father) wants to hear what Ruby thought of his game.
  • James wants to learn more about history.
  • Kim may want to intervene.
  • Conversations take time and there is a deadline.

Coda

This last section is short and non-interactive. It presents a scene some time after the surgery.
